Canadian Women in History
October is Women's History Month in Canada, and to honour some of the women who have paved the road smoother for us, with their dreams, activism and achievements of the past, we focused the October 2017 Red Tent women's circle on sharing and learning about a small selection of the many, many hardworking, talented, brave, persevering women whose lives have impacted Canada and Canadians. By the end of the evening we felt so much inspiration, awe and gratitude for the women of Canadian history.
This quote by Nellie McClung of the Famous Five sums up a common theme for these trailblazing women: “Never retreat, never explain, never apologize. Get the thing done and let them howl.”
The following women had short bios prepared about them by Comox Valley Red Tent co-facilitators, often written in first-person so that they could be read aloud by participants at the October 2017 Red Tent, bringing herstory to life. Gratitude to Lori Kublik, Alma Wennerth, Bev Sparks, Jackie Greening and Joanne McKechnie for the research efforts. After reading the short introductory bios below, you may search for further information on these women and others on various websites and in libraries, including heroines.ca, Canada's Great Women on Canada's History site, short video Her Story, Our Story, eleven Canadian women who were firsts in their fields, Heritage Minute video on the first Canadian women at medical school, and current Women of Influence.
